For 5 weeks, I have been freaking out because my old blog got 992 hits while the new site got 639 hits. Added together, that would have been a sizeable month for me… but, NOOooo… I could not figure out how to get my traffic to move to the new WordPress.org site
I chatted with several Happiness Engineers.
I read the support forums on migration.
I uploaded plugins that were supposed to help.
And all the while, the old site was still getting more traffic than the new site. I was competing with myself.
-(and probably doing something bad with my search results at Google).
I lost 1,000 hits in June and probably a few followers. I don’t really know.
BUT THERE IS A SOLUTION!
For a mere $13 US, WordPress.com installed a 301 Site Redirect for me.
I get to keep my WordPress.com account, user name, and dashboard.
And I can still follow other writers’ blogs on the WordPress Reader.
But I also get to use my new WordPress.org dashboard, themes, and widgets.
From today on, when a search engine (like Google) directs someone to my content, the Site Redirect will seamlessly and silently move them to www.poorkitteh.com -powered by WordPress.org and hosted by DreamHost. They don’t have to click any links. In fact, they don’t get to give permission or to decline. Their browser will simply be redirected. It’s not Ray Bradbury’s automated house, but I still find that to be creepy in an artificial intelligence way.
Why nobody told me about Site Redirect sooner is a mystery. If I were the sales rep for WordPress.com, I would have sold the $13 upgrade. WTF?
