When I began this job at the clothing store, I made an unusual effort to be chipper and cheerful, to learn people’s names, and to leave my problems at home. Now my coworkers make appreciative comments about my “smiling face” and they tease me about being happy every shift. Again, I am so grateful that not one person at my workplace is a bastard. Okay, one guy is, but not to me, and he has no authority. The rest of my coworkers, even my supervisors, are so unbelievably nice that I frequently wonder how I got past security. This makes for a low stress environment and I need low stress. Sometimes it seems false to me that I had a nervous breakdown only a year ago.
So I am really enjoying my job, but at the same time, I know it is a fantasy. I cannot continue to work 25 hours a week for $8 an hour. Reality and adult-life will have to take over soon. That’s a sure thing, but for now, it’s all good and so am I.
