Today at work at the clothing store, they made me the Greeter. I wore a faux gold lame apron that appointed me “Gifting Expert” and accosted every customer who walked through the door. “Hello! Happy Holidays!! May I help you find the perfect gift?”
Most everybody ran, but as long as I caused them to run into the store, my task was done.
It sounds like a cushy job, getting paid a salary to say “Happy Holidays” to people. That’s what I tried to convince myself, anyhow. I worked it out on my first break. $7.96 an hour times 3.76 shekels to the dollar equals 31 shekels an hour. In Israel, I was doing hard work cleaning toilets for 24 shekels an hour; and now I get 31 shekels just to smile at customers?! – I should be sooo happy.
No. It was craptastic being the greeter. I was confined to a small area. I had to fake smile for eight hours. People asked me for stooped stuff that they can get at the Dollar Store. “Do you have such-and-such?” Let me look… No. Would you like a sweater instead?
