Yesterday I wrote about waiting 6 hours for a psychological assessment so I could possibly qualify for low cost psychiatric services. The staff at the clinic were somewhat unkind to me and they outright minimized my domestic abuse history. To the intake counselor, the domestic abuse issue was a checkbox: either Driftwood punched me or I did not suffer abuse. I was really hurt and angry. I felt vulnerable and exposed, and it made me wonder about the treatment that rape victims receive immediately after they have been attacked. I thought there must be so many women in the world who get treated unkindly by the people who are supposed to help them. Maybe a police officer has a bad morning trying to get to work in rush hour traffic and then isn’t kind to a victim. Everybody takes their problems to work. It’s human nature and it probably happens all the time.
